History of Barbie: Vintage Era 1960 Documentary

Hello and welcome back today we are going to continue with Barbie´s beginnings in the 1960´s. This was a big year for Barbie because it showcased her first careers which were a fashion designer and a nightclub singer. So lets get right into it.

In 1960 two new Barbie dolls arrived on the market known as Ponytail Barbie 3 and 4. Ponytail Barbie #3 had a softer curve to their eyebrows and brown or blue eyeliner. It was the only time both brown and blue eyeshadow was used but blue eyeshadow is rarer on a #3. Which Eyeshadow do you like the most? I like the blue the best but you tell me what do you think? Some #3´s and 4s came with a factory braided ponytail. Ponytail Barbie #3 fades to an ivory color that smells like crayons but the Ponytail Barbie #4 was made of a different kind of plastic that keeps the flesh color. Both the 3 and 4s had blue eyes and red nail polish on their finger and toe nails and came in barbies signature black and white striped swimsuit, white sunglasses with blue lens and a pair of black open toe heels and either gold hoop or pearl stud earrings. Both dolls were available with either blonde or brunette hair and whereas the #3 only came with a Black pedestal with wire stand the #4 came with either the black pedestal with wire stand or a plain black wire stand. Which stand do you like better? I am pretty partial to the pedestal stand but you tell me what do you think? Both the #3 and #4 have a Barbie ™ mark on the the doll.

Nineteen outfits from the previous year were relaunched and they were #911 Golden girl , #912 Cotton Casual, 915 Peachy Fleecy Coat, 916 Commuter Set, 917 Apple Print Sheath,  918 Cruise Stripes, 919 Fashion Undergarments,  921 Floral Petticoat, 961 Evening Splendour, 962 Barbie-Q, 963 Resort Set, 965 Nighty Negligee Set, 966 Plantation Belle, 967 Picnic Set, 969 Suburban Shopper, 972 Wedding Day Set, 973 Sweet Dreams, 975 Winter Holiday and 976 Sweater Girl. You can see these outfits in more detail in my previous video. I will have it linked in the end cards at the end of this video. Then there were new outfits which where 977 Silken Flame, 978 Let's Dance,979 Friday Nite Date, 981 Busy Gal, 982 Solo in the Spotlight, and  983 Enchanted Evening.

The Silken Flame sets stock number was 977 and it was manufactured from 1960 to 1964. It had a short dress which had a white satin skirt gathered into a strapless red velvet fitted bodice and a wide golden belt and gold clutch purse and black open-toe heels. This set is pretty easy to find.  The satin of the dress has held up well over the years however, it can be a challenge to find the belt without creases or peeling. The Barbie tag is in the dress for this set. I really like this set it definitely has a wow factor. But what do you think?

The let's dance set's stock number was 978 and it was manufactured from 1960 to 1964 and it had a bright blue dress with black and white floral print. The full skirt spun into a cutout back bodice with a tie at the neck, this tie is typically missing. There is a blue silk sewn-in cummerbund. In mint condition, the fabric of the dress should be very crisp and full. The cummerbund is prone to fading, it should be a very bright blue and in some cases are almost purple. There was also a "pearl" drop necklace which is very prone to tarnishing and can be quite hard to find in mint condition. There are black open-toe heels, and white vinyl clutch. The dress, white purse and black shoes are not difficult to find. The Barbie tag is in the dress. This isnt my favorite set but what do you think? Tell me in the comments below.

The Friday Nite Date sets stock number was 979 and it was manufactured from 1960 to 1964. It came with a  blue corduroy jumper with felt accents and a white cotton underdress with puffed sleeves and a ruffled skirt. The jumper closes in the back with snaps. There are two juice glasses, which had fizz made out of cotton. The glasses also had straws. There was also a black tray and black open toe heels. Typically the felt accents are missing on the corduroy jumper but here you can see how it should look, The rare items in this ensemble are the juice glasses, the “cotton fizz” in the juice glasses, and the rarest of all – the tiny straws, However, the black tray is pretty easy to find, the earliest versions of the tray were flat and those are rare. The Barbie tag is in the skirt of the blue corduroy dress. What do you think of this set? Tell me in the comments below.

The Busy Gal sets stock number was 981 was manufactured from 1960 to 1961 and came with a red linen suit. The sheath skirt came with a matching short-sleeved jacket with a red and white striped blouse. The accessories were a navy straw open crown hat with a matching navy straw belt with a brass buckle. There were also black-rimmed glasses and navy open-toe heels as well as a green lined black portfolio with "Barbie, Fashion Designer" printed in white and there were two black and white illustrations 3 on each sheet of different designs. The red linen short sleeve suit and red and white striped body blouse have held up very well and are fairly easy to find. The navy blue straw belt and hat are more difficult to find in good condition, and the navy open toe heels are one of the hardest colors to find. The portfolio and sketches are probably the most difficult to find in this set especially in good condition. The Barbie tag is in the red jacket.  I love this set its definitely one of my favorites! What do you think? Tell me in the comments down below.

The Solo in the Spotlight sets stock number was 982 and it was manufactured from 1960 to 1964. It included a glitter knit black formal dress, that had a frill of tulle at the hem ,with a red satin rose accent. A four-strand crystal bead necklace, long black tricot gloves, black open-toe heels, a pink chiffon scarf, and silvery microphone stand. This dress is fairly easy to find however the glitter is frequently worn thin or completely off the bust area of the dress and the red rose is typically missing. The microphone and stand is actually three pieces: the plastic bottom, the metal pole and the plastic microphone and these can be very difficult to find. The Barbie tag is in the dress. I love this set its definitely one of my favorites from this year but you tell me what do you think?

The Enchanted Evening sets stock number was 983 and it was manufactured from 1960 to 1963. It included a pale pink satin gown. The bodice had a fold-over hem at the top. The skirt was slim with a long, draping train on her left side. At the waist earlier versions had three sequins and beads while later versions had a pink satin rose and a real white rabbit fur stole with pink satin lining. The accessories were long white tricot gloves, a choker with three rows of pearls, matching earrings, and clear open-toe heels with gold glitter. The gown and stole are fairly easy to find however the necklace and earrings and shoes are considered rare and are difficult to find.  The clear shoes are also prone to discoloration and breakage and most of the glitter is typically missing. The Barbie tag is in the dress and on the stole in this set, This is my favorte set in this year! What do you think dont you just love this dress?

In 1960 three gift sets were produced and sold. The first was called the 856 Party Set. The Party Set included Included a #3 or #4 Ponytail Barbie doll in her black and white striped zebra swimsuit with black open toe heels, sunglasses and either pearl earrings or gold hoop earrings. The 857 Barbie Mix 'n Match Gift Set included a #3 or #4 Ponytail Barbie doll wearing a striped swimsuit and either pearl stud earrings or gold hoop earrings. She comes with sunglasses, and black open-toe heels. In 1960 and 1962 the outfits and partial outfits included in the set are all from the 900 series which were #919 Undergarments (bra and panties), #963 Resort Set (jacket, shorts, t-shirt, hat) #976 Sweater Girl (orange sweater top, matching cardigan sweater, gray flannel skirt), #975 Winter Holiday (leather coat, hooded tee-shirt, black knit pants, travel bag), #981 Busy Gal (red and white blouse), and #967 Picnic Set (jeans and red checked shirt). This set was originally launched by Montgomery Ward in 1960 through 1963  and was later relaunched by Spiegel in 1963 through 1964 which was slightly different.

The Barbie Trousseau set had a #3 or #4 Ponytail Barbie in her black and white swimsuit with either pearl earrings or gold hoop earrings and black open toe heels and sunglasses. The included outfits were Cotton Casual, the Commuter set, and it came with the gay parisienne hat instead of the commuter hat, the panties, bra and girdle from the undergarments set, evening splendor, Resort Set, the nightgown, robe, and slippers from Nightly Negligee, Wedding Day the leotard from Winter Holiday and Silken Flame. There was a comb, brush and mirror as well and the 1960 pink Barbie booklet. There is either a black wire stand or a black pedestal stand.
